PREMIER Daniel Andrews has praised the Ahmadiyya Muslim group for its commitment to peace and harmony.

Speaking at a peace symposium hosted by Ahmadis’ at their Bait-ul-Salam Mosque, Langwarrin, Mr Andrews said members had displayed a similar spirit to that of emergency service volunteers during the recent floods.

“What you as a Muslim community embody and demonstrate is akin to emergency service volunteers working together in challenging circumstances,” he said.

Mr Andrews said the Ahmadiyya group, which has the motto ‘Love for All, Hatred for None’, had demonstrated a true example of Islamic values including peace, inclusion and looking out for each other.

He lashed out at those promoting division by misusing language and labels.

“We have had some very hurtful and incorrect things said in recent times,” he said.

Mr Andrews made the comments on Friday at the peace symposium, which was attended by representatives from many faiths, police, the defence force, council and politicians.

The Ahmadiyya group’s Australian head, Imam Kauser, said all were equal in the eyes of God.

He said it was essential that people talked about what they had in common and not differences.

People of all faiths must join together to promote peace, he said.

“We are working for peace. We pray for peace,” Imam Kauser said.

“We are the people who seek to transform hatred and animosity into love and affection.”

Imam Kauser said members of the Ahmadiyya had not been involved in discord or unrest.

“We are loyal (to Australia). We will service this country with all our abilities.”
